When to Visit Santo António & Príncipe — Seasons and the Auto de Floripes

Príncipe is wetter than São Tomé — timing matters a little more here.

Seasons

Príncipe receives abundant rain for much of the year. The driest, most dependable period is the gravana, roughly June to August or early September. A second, sunnier window usually opens around December to February, with hot days and calmer seas.

The wettest months are typically March to May and October–November, when showers are frequent and heavy and dirt roads become slippery. Flights are also more likely to be delayed.

Events

  • 17 January: the anniversary of the island’s discovery in 1471, marked with local celebrations.
  • Mid-August: the Auto de Floripes turns the whole town into a stage.
  • 12 July: Independence Day.

Wildlife

Turtles nest on Príncipe’s beaches from about November to March, and humpback whales pass between about July and October.
