1The main house and square of Roça Sundy
The estate is laid out around a broad grassed square enclosed by crenellated walls. On one side is the two-storey main house, now a hotel, its verandas looking over the garden; around it stand the former stables, chapel and stores. It is among the most complete plantation ensembles in the country.
ℹ️ Visitors are welcome; ask at reception. 30–45 minutes to walk around.

2The eclipse site and telescope
A plaque in the grounds marks the spot from which Eddington observed the eclipse of 29 May 1919. Cloud covered much of totality, and only a couple of his photographic plates showed usable stars — enough, combined with the results from Brazil, to support Einstein’s prediction. A telescope is displayed as part of the story.
ℹ️ Free with a visit to the estate.

3The eclipse exhibition
Interpretive panels and a small science space, created around the centenary in 2019, explain what Eddington was testing, why an eclipse was needed and how a remote cocoa plantation came to be chosen. It is clear and engaging even if physics is not your subject.
ℹ️ Opening is by arrangement — ask at the hotel. About 30 minutes.

4Plantation buildings
Beyond the square are the long rows of workers’ quarters, the old hospital and drying houses with their distinctive verandas and steps. Some have been restored, others stand roofless. They are the physical record of the contract-labour system and of the community that still lives here.
ℹ️ Go with a local guide and ask before photographing homes.
-
5Old machinery
Rusting engines, cocoa dryers and remnants of the narrow-gauge railway that once carried beans to the shore lie around the estate — evidence of how industrial these plantations were at their peak.
ℹ️ Seen on the guided walk.

6The beach below Sundy
A steep track leads from the plateau to a long, golden, west-facing beach — one of the finest on the island and superb at sunset. The Sundy Praia lodge sits discreetly in the forest behind it.
ℹ️ About 10–15 minutes by car from the roça. Public beach; no facilities.

7Roça Belo Monte and the Banana lookout
Belo Monte’s plantation house, built in the 1920s, stands in gardens on a headland. A short path leads to the mirante, a clifftop viewpoint straight down onto the curve of Praia Banana. From here a track descends to the sand.
ℹ️ About 30 min from Santo António. The hotel has reopened after renovation; confirm visitor access.

8Other roças
Príncipe is dotted with smaller estates in various states of ruin and revival, such as Roça São Joaquim in the west and Roça Paciência, where island produce is processed. A driver can link one or two into a circuit.
ℹ️ Access and what is open vary — ask your guide.
The science in one paragraph
General relativity says that mass curves space, so light passing the Sun should be deflected. The only time stars near the Sun can be photographed is during a total eclipse. By comparing their apparent positions during the eclipse with their normal positions at night, Eddington’s team measured a shift consistent with Einstein’s figure — about twice what Newtonian physics would allow.
