Staying in a roça
Both main houses operate as hotels. Roça Sundy, part of the HBD Príncipe group, has rooms in the restored plantation buildings and suits travellers who want history and the forest rather than a beach at the door. Belo Monte is smaller, with Praia Banana a walk below. Availability changes with renovations — confirm before planning around either.
Visiting as a non-guest
Day visitors are generally welcome at both. Call ahead through your guesthouse if you want a guided tour, the eclipse exhibition opened, or lunch.
Etiquette
People live in the estate quarters at Sundy. Stay with your guide, greet residents, and do not enter or photograph homes without being invited.

Roça Sundy & Belo Monte: FAQs
What exactly happened at Roça Sundy in 1919?
Arthur Eddington photographed stars near the Sun during a total eclipse on 29 May 1919. The measurements supported Einstein’s prediction that gravity bends light.
Is there much to see of the experiment itself?
A commemorative plaque, a displayed telescope and an exhibition. The power of the place is in standing where it happened.
Can I visit Belo Monte just for the view?
Usually yes — the lookout is a short walk from the house. Ask on arrival.
Is cocoa still grown here?
Yes. Cocoa is still farmed on Príncipe, including around Sundy, and the island’s beans go into some highly regarded chocolate.
