When to Visit the North Coast of São Tomé — Seasons, Sea & Turtles

The driest corner of the country, good in every month.

Seasons

Thanks to the rain shadow, the north coast gets a fraction of the south’s rainfall. In the gravana (June–September) the grass turns gold and the baobabs drop their leaves; skies are often hazy. From October the landscape greens up, with showers that seldom last.

The sunniest beach weather is typically in the gravanito, around December to February.

Sea and wildlife

  • Snorkelling: possible all year at Lagoa Azul; the water is usually clearest in the drier months.
  • Turtles: nesting at Morro Peixe from about November to March.
  • Whales: humpbacks may be seen offshore between about July and October.

Weekdays or weekends?

On Sundays and public holidays the beaches fill with families, music and grills — fun if you want company. For solitude, come on a weekday.
